A onetime Clinton special counsel resigned from a White House civil-liberties oversight board yesterday, but the defection of the No. 2 Justice official overshadowed Lanny Davis' act of protest. Davis, the only Democrat on the Privacy and Civil Liberties Board, said the panel had become unable to check the abuses of an executive that appointed and controlled it.

This isn't the first time Davis and Bush have clashed: US News reported in 2001 that the future president hazed Davis when they were frat brothers at Yale. Meanwhile, Newsweek's Michael Isikoff debunks Deputy AG Paul McNulty's personal pretext for his departure, citing a close source who confirms the deputy's disillusionment with his boss, Alberto Gonzales.
