In 2008, the country was fixated on Hillary Clinton's pantsuits. In 2016, the fashion focus of the election is, apparently, Marco Rubio's footwear. Rubio was spotted during a campaign stop in New Hampshire on Monday sporting slick, heeled boots that have caught the attention of everyone from Carly Fiorina to New York magazine, which compares Rubio's fashion taste to that of One Direction heartthrob Harry Styles. While serving to add a couple of inches to Rubio's 5-foot-10-inch frame, the boots have resulted in more than a few laughs. "This is straight out of an Austin Powers movie," MSNBC host Joe Scarborough said on Morning Joe, per the Guardian. "They're shagalicious!" Notes New York: "Conveniently, that style is called a Cuban heel, because Marco Rubio is on-brand from head to toe."
Vanity Fair suggested Rubio might be wearing a $1,990 pair of Tom Ford boots, but Rubio's camp tells Politico they were purchased from Florsheim; this $135 pair looks awfully similar, per the New York Times. That's not to say Rubio isn't splurging elsewhere. Despite his campaign manager boasting that Rubio "flies 95% commercial, always coach" back in September, Politico reports the candidate has been flying on private jets almost exclusively for the past two months at a cost of tens of thousands of dollars per day. He plans to keep up the expense through the primaries. At an event in Iowa on Tuesday, Rubio said simply, "We want to get everywhere." (Donald Trump thinks he's more attractive than Marco.)
