Best Lines From the Debate So Far

As the eight top GOP candidates looked to make an impression in Tuesday night's debate in Milwaukee, here's a look at some of their lines earning attention, via Politico, CNN, the New York Times, and the AP:

  • Ben Carson: "Thank you for not asking what I said in the 10th grade. I appreciate that," he said when asked about the scrutiny of his life story. "I have no problem with being vetted; what I do have a problem with is being lied about." He then pivoted to say that while he told the truth, Hillary Clinton "lied" about Benghazi.
  • Donald Trump: "We are a country of laws, we need borders, we will have a wall, the wall will be built," he said, praising a court ruling against President Obama's immigration plans. Later: "If Putin wants to go and knock the hell out of ISIS, I am all for it," he said, declaring that the US can't be the "policeman of the world." (He got much feistier in a spat with Kasich.)
  • Jeb Bush: "Hillary Clinton has said that Barack Obama's policies get an A. Really?" he said, referring to the president's economic programs. "It may be the best that Hillary Clinton can do. But it's not the best that America can do." Later, rebutting Trump on his views about Russia and ISIS: "That's like a board game. That's like playing Monopoly, that's not how the world works."
  • Marco Rubio: "Welders make more money than philosophers. We need more welders and less philosophers," he said, calling for more vocational training in the US. Later: "I've never met Vladimir Putin, but I know enough about him to know he's a gangster."

  • Ted Cruz: "We're tired of being told it's anti-immigrant," he said of the media's characterization of Republican views on immigration. "It's offensive." He added that if "Republicans join Democrats as the party of amnesty, we will lose." At another point, he drew applause with the line, "You think defending this nation is expensive? Try not defending it."
  • Bonus Cruz flub: "Five major agencies that I would eliminate: the IRS, the Department of Commerce, the Department of Energy, the Department of Commerce, and HUD."
  • John Kasich: "I've done it twice, I'll do it thrice," he said of balancing the budget. Later, rebutting Cruz's statement that big banks should be allowed to fail: "When a bank is ready to go under, and depositors are ready to lose their life savings, you just don't say, ‘We believe in philosophical concerns.'"
  • Carly Fiorina: "It is crony capitalism at its worst," she said of Obamacare. Later, playing off a remark that Trump made about meeting Putin, she said she, too, had met him: "Not in a green room for a show, but for a private meeting."
  • Rand Paul: "Hey, Gerard, we might want to point out China's not part of this deal," to moderator Gerard Baker during a rant by Trump against China in regard to the TPP deal. At another point: "You can be strong without being involved in every civil war around the world."
