After the new Star Wars movie leaves theaters, will you be able to stream it on Netflix? Yes ... if you live in Canada. That's the only place where Netflix has streaming rights for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Variety reports, and as such, that's the only place you'll be able to watch it on Netflix next year. US residents wanting to watch the flick without buying or renting the actual DVD will have to do so on premium cable channel Starz.
In the US, Starz has an exclusive output deal with Disney, and though it's over at the end of the year, Netflix's deal with Disney doesn't start until next year—which is why Star Wars, out Dec. 18, will be on Starz but not on Netflix. But in Canada, the pay-TV agreements already expired, and the Netflix Canada deal started in 2015. "Star Wars: The Force Awakens is slated to come to the service in the country; under the terms of the deal, that will occur approximately eight months after the movie leaves theaters," a Netflix rep confirms.
