ABC News doctor and reporter Jamie Zimmerman packed so much into her short life it was "as if she knew her time was limited," her mother says in a moving Facebook post. Dr. Zimmerman, who was 31, was on vacation in Hawaii and drowned after being swept out to sea on Monday when she lost her footing while trying to cross the Lumahai River on Kauai, Variety reports. The death appears to have been a freak accident: A Kauai County spokeswoman tells the AP that the river can be dangerous, but this is the first major incident there in recent memory and there was no flash flood warning in place that day.
Zimmerman, a graduate of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, worked for ABC's medical unit and taught meditation, as well as wrote for several publications, her mother says. She also helped refugees in Zambia, built classrooms in Uganda, volunteered in a hospital in India, worked with indigenous people in Peru, and served as a UN health representative in Haiti. "Sweet dreams, my darling daughter, my sweet pea, my role model, my pride and joy! I will love you forever," her mother writes. "As I repeatedly told you, I was thrilled that you lived life to the fullest. Always know that I will miss you every second, minute, and hour of every day." (More Hawaii stories.)
