Police may have found their suspects in the freeway shootings that have terrorized Phoenix over the past two weeks. The Arizona Department of Public Safety confirms to the AP that authorities are questioning two people in relation to the shootings today. No additional information was given, but police were reportedly focusing on a white SUV at a convenience store near Interstate 10. Since Aug. 29, at least 11 cars have been shot in apparently random attacks, mostly along a stretch of I-10 through Phoenix. The only injury reported so far is a girl whose face was cut by glass when a bullet shattered her window.
The AP reports the search for whomever is behind the shootings has intensified in recent days, with "a panicked public flooding a police hotline with tips." Police have received thousands of tips, and many drivers are avoiding I-10 altogether. "It's kind of spooky, man, when people can't drive up and down the interstate unless they're getting shot at," one Arizona resident tells the AP. Authorities have called the shootings terrorism, and a citizen vigilante force formed in recent days to hunt down the shooter or shooters. (More shooting stories.)
