With Miley Cyrus hosting—and the show aired on a time delay in case she did anything especially wild—this year's MTV VMAs promised to deliver plenty of memorable moments, and it did not disappoint. There was no twerking from Miley this time around, though she wore a succession of provocative outfits—including what People calls "chandelier underwear"—and flashed a nipple during a backstage costume change, the AP reports. Some more highlights:

  • More Nicki Minaj beef. The Taylor Swift-Nicki Minaj feud is definitely over, so much so that the pair hugged at the end of a duet of "The Night Is Still Young," but Minaj isn't happy with Cyrus' suggestion in a recent interview that Minaj's criticism of Swift is based on jealousy, the Guardian reports. "Now, back to this bitch that had a lot to say about me the other day in the press—Miley, what's good?" Minaj said after accepting the Best Hip-Hop Video award for "Anaconda."

  • Kanye 2020. Swift—who won four awards, including Best Video for "Bad Blood"—introduced Kanye West as winner of the Video Vanguard Award, and she joked about the time he didn't let her finish her speech at the 2009 VMAs. West thanked her for being "gracious" before a trademark rambling tirade in which he announced his presidential ambitions. Much more on that here.
  • Bieber emotion. Justin Bieber's performance of his new single "What Do You Mean?" was literally soaring, with the singer levitating with the help of wires, and the 21-year-old broke down in tears afterward, apparently overcome by the audience reaction, the AP reports.
  • Another surprise from Miley. She announced during the show that surprise new album "Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz" was available free online. The move isn't totally unprecedented, though it was as if she had "declared that her new music was the real, more interesting show, and bigger news than the ceremony itself," writes Daniel D'Addario at Time.
