Taylor Swift is a human being who does human things. That's one of the main takeaways, according to Vox, after the singer posted a knee-jerk reaction yesterday to a tweet by fellow artist Nicki Minaj. "If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year," Minaj tweeted yesterday afternoon after learning her "Anaconda" video didn't get an MTV Video Music Awards nomination for video of the year. A few hours later, Swift—whose "Bad Blood" video was nominated—responded, tweeting, "@NICKIMINAJ I've done nothing but love & support you. It's unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot." Minaj's surprised reply: "Huh? U must not be reading my tweets. Didn't say a word about u. I love u just as much. But u should speak on this."

Vox notes that while it may have made sense for Swift to infer that Minaj was talking about her ("Bad Blood" also features slim models/celebs like Gigi Hadid, Cara Delevingne, and Jessica Alba), Minaj is also a frequent commenter on "the ways that white culture appropriates and homogenizes black culture in the course of making it 'popular.'" Minaj had also tweeted: "Oh but trust me. I'll be on that stage to collect my awards for vid of the year. Feeling Myself & Anaconda," to which Swift had this somewhat tone-deaf response: "If I win, please come up with me!! You're invited to any stage I'm ever on." The other critical takeaway from all this mess? "That the Ed Sheeran video is awful," per Vox. In addition to Sheeran and Swift, the AP reports Beyonce's "7/11," Kendrick Lamar's "Alright," and Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk" were nominated. ("Bad Blood" was in the news for another reason this week.)
