No. 3 Memphis Outlasts SMU

The third-ranked Memphis Tigers had to fight and claw to earn a 72-55 victory over a 9-19, but pesky, Southern Methodist team. Freshman Derrick Rose had 19 points to lead the Tigers, who once again struggled against the lowly Mustangs in Dallas; Memphis won a 64-61 nail-biter last year. Jon Killen’s 16 points lead SMU, reports the Associated Press.

The Mustangs held Memphis to under 45 percent shooting from the field and pressured them into shooting a miserable 7-for-23 from 3-point range. Memphis closed the first half on a 14-5 run to go into the break up 38-26, but SMU hung around for most of the second half, thanks in large part to their 54 percent shooting from 2-point range.
