7 Leaders Try to Solve World's Vexing Problems
   (Michael Kappeler)

It's now past lunchtime in Germany, where seven world leaders are huddling for 26 hours in a bid to address an "ambitious agenda" of world issues. The latest from the G7:

  • Atop the agenda today: terrorism and climate change. Angela Merkel is pushing the G7 to come to a consensus about restricting the rise in global temperatures to what USA Today frames as "a strict corridor—2°C or 3.6°F." Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Arabi will brief leaders on his country's fight against ISIS.
  • After a sideline meeting earlier today, the White House says Obama and Francois Hollande found a couple areas of agreement. One, that economic sanctions against Russia should stay in place until Russia fully implements a peace accord with Ukraine; two, to stay united in pursuit of a deal to restrict Iran's nuclear program.

  • Activists have had a hard time sending their message to the G7 leaders, who are tucked away in a secluded Alpine valley guarded by thousands of police. So Greenpeace decided to project its demands onto a nearby mountain. The environmental group used green lasers to beam the words "G-7: Go for 100% renewables" onto the side of the Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak.
  • Mystery solved: the mayor of the village where Obama was served a pre-lunchtime beer yesterday says it was alcohol-free, as requested by US and German officials. Merkel welcomed Obama to Kruen yesterday, and while it wasn't yet noon, the president was served local delicacies including a tall glass of beer.
