A Hawaiian man is dead after jumping into Honokohau Harbor yesterday to catch a swordfish and getting fatally gored, CNN reports. Boat captain Randy Llanes, 47, who was head of a deep-sea fishing charter, jumped in and hit the broadbill swordfish with a spear gun, officials say. The fish then "thrashed about, leaving a puncture wound to his upper chest," says a police lieutenant. A sergeant tells KHON 2 that "the fish got wrapped around a mooring anchor, came back and swam at him." Emergency responders tried saving Llanes, but he died from trauma the same day at a local hospital.
Swordfish rarely appear in shallow waters or attack people, according to Andrew Rossiter, head of the Waikiki Aqarium: "This is very, very unusual," he says. "Maybe the fish was following a school of fish into the shallow water ... [or] was injured in some way or somehow impaired." The fish was three feet long with a three-foot bill, and weighed roughly 40 pounds. Llanes' friends and family gathered for a memorial, where people jumped into the water with a traditional lei and swam to the area where he was gored. Llanes was "just a great local boy," a friend says. "[He] got married in the last few years, he’s got a son that’s about 5 … It’s just pretty shocking for the whole harbor." (More swordfish stories.)
