The Newtown, Conn., home that one neighbor describes as "a constant reminder of the evil that resided there" is going to be destroyed. Officials in the town have voted to tear down the home where Adam Lanza lived and leave the land as open space, reports the Hartford Courant. The 3,100-square-foot home where Lanza killed his mother before massacring 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School was given to the town last month by a bank that acquired it from the Lanza family.
"Those of us who walk, run, drive, ride, or otherwise must pass it multiple times a day are having a hard time moving on," a neighbor wrote to the town council, adding that the home still attracts ghoulish tourists. A town official says that the council consulted victims' families before deciding on demolition, and they plan to put a covenant on the deed to ensure that the families, not the town, will profit if the property is sold in the future, reports the Wall Street Journal. Before it transferred the home to Newtown, the bank removed and incinerated all of its contents, right down to the carpets, to make sure no macabre souvenirs ended up "for sale on eBay two years from now."
