After Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's opening monologue, the Golden Globes were off and running:

  • Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture went to JK Simmons for Whiplash.
  • Best Supporting Actress, TV went to Joanne Froggatt for Downton Abbey. Onstage, she mentioned a letter she got from a rape survivor who "just wanted to be heard" after the most recent season. Froggatt said, "I heard you," and that she hoped by mentioning the letter so publicly, the writer felt the whole world heard her.
  • Best Miniseries or TV Movie went to Fargo.
  • Best Actor in a Miniseries or TV Movie went to Billy Bob Thornton for Fargo. He kept things short and sweet, noting that these days you can get in trouble for anything you say: "So I'm just going to say thank you."
  • Best Actress in a TV Series, Musical, or Comedy went to Gina Rodriguez for Jane the Virgin.
  • Best TV Series, Comedy, or Musical went to Transparent, an Amazon original series. Creator Jill Soloway dedicated the award to Leelah Alcorn.

  • Best Original Score went to Jóhann Jóhannsson for The Theory of Everything.
  • The audience went absolutely crazy for Prince, who presented the award for Best Original Song to "Glory," from Selma, by John Legend and Common.
  • Best Supporting Actor, TV went to Matt Bomer for The Normal Heart.
  • Ricky Gervais returned to the Golden Globes stage to give a mini-monologue ("famous people are above the law, as it should be") and present Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Comedy, or Musical to Amy Adams for Big Eyes.
  • Best Animated Film went to How to Train Your Dragon 2.
  • Presenter Jared Leto mentioned the Charlie Hebdo attack, saying, "Je suis Charlie" before presenting Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture to Patricia Arquette for Boyhood.
  • Best Screenplay went to Birdman.
  • Best Actor in a TV Series, Comedy, or Musical went to Jeffrey Tambor for Transparent; he called Amazon his "new best friend" and dedicated his win to the transgender community.
  • Best Foreign Language Film went to Leviathan.
  • Best Actress in a Miniseries or TV Movie went to Maggie Gyllenhaal for The Honourable Woman.
  • Best TV Series, Drama went to The Affair.
  • Best Actor in a TV Series, Drama went to Kevin Spacey for House of Cards; he got bleeped during his acceptance speech.
  • The Cecil B. DeMille Award went to George Clooney, who spoke to his date during his speech: "Amal, whatever alchemy it is that brought us together, I couldn't be more proud to be your husband."
  • Best Director went to Richard Linklater for Boyhood.
  • Best Actress in a TV Series, Drama went to Ruth Wilson for The Affair.
  • Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Comedy, or Musical went to Michael Keaton for Birdman.
  • Best Motion Picture, Comedy, or Musical went to The Grand Budapest Hotel.
  • Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama went to Julianne Moore for Still Alice.
  • Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama went to Eddie Redmayne for The Theory of Everything.
  • Best Motion Picture, Drama went to Boyhood.
