New York City drops the ball, but the small North Carolina town of Brasstown has rung in most of the last 20 years with a little something it likes to call the New Year's Eve Possum Drop. The AP describes it thusly: "The Brasstown event involves enclosing an opossum in a tinsel-covered plastic box and lowering it to the ground at midnight, then releasing the animal." This year, however, PETA complained, citing the effects of the lights and noise on the possum's nerves. And while a judge ruled that the organizer could still use a live possum as long as he got a state permit, Clay Logan says he had no time for that. His solution, which is sure to delight PETA? He says he'll put roadkill or possum stew in the box, and drop that. (Meanwhile, this Pennsylvania town just drops a big nail.)
