Brisbane, Australia's third-largest city, was lashed by its worst storm in decades yesterday, with wind, rain, and hail lifting roofs, cutting power lines, flooding streets, and injuring a dozen people, officials say. The storm struck late in the afternoon, trapping commuters for hours in stalled electric trains and cutting off power to around 90,000 people. Television news broadcasts showed downtown high-rise windows smashed, light planes flipped upside down on an airfield, and cars almost completely submerged in flooded streets. Hailstones—some of them bigger than golf balls—caused widespread damage in what Queensland state's premier said was the worst storm to hit the city since 1985, reports the BBC.
