U2 recently revealed that Bono took a bit of a "cycling spill" and had to have surgery on his arm, but the details are a bit more gory than that phrase might have led you to believe. The singer was riding his bike through Central Park in New York on Sunday when he tried to avoid another biker and ended up in a "high energy bicycle accident," his orthopedic trauma surgeon says in a statement to Rolling Stone. In addition to the left humerus bone in his upper arm shattering in six different places and puncturing his skin, and his left shoulder blade being fractured in three separate places, he also suffered a "facial fracture involving the orbit of his eye," the statement says.

The surgery to his arm involved inserting three metal plates and 18 screws; he had to have another surgery Monday on his fractured left pinkie finger. He'll need "intensive" therapy but will make a full recovery, the surgeon says. U2 has a tour coming up, though details have not yet been released, and it's not clear how Bono's injury will affect those plans. The injury did require the band to postpone the weeklong residency they were supposed to start on Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show this week. Fallon and The Roots filled in for U2, notes Gawker, which says that his "impression of a young, vital Bono might actually be better than Bono's at this point." (More U2 stories.)
