Eric Frein has been a fugitive in the mountains of Pennsylvania for almost a month—and police say a journal has left them in no doubt that the man they're trying to hunt down is "pure evil." The journal found at an abandoned campsite appears to recount the night he ambushed and killed a state trooper at a remote barracks, reports the New York Times. "Fri Sept 12th got a shot around 11pm and took it," the notes say. "He dropped ... I was surprised at how quick ... I took a follow-up shot on his head ... neck area. He was still and quiet after." Frein also wrote of how he shot at another trooper who came to the aid of his fallen colleague, and how he faced "disaster" when his Jeep ended up in a pond after he drove down an access road to avoid a roadblock.

"I will tell you, after reading this cold-blooded and absolutely chilling account, I can only describe Eric Frein's actions as pure evil," a police spokesman told reporters yesterday. Police have narrowed the search for Frein down to a few square miles of rugged terrain in the Pocono Mountains; the most recent suspected sighting was Tuesday afternoon, the AP reports. During the search, police have found pipe bombs apparently left behind by the fugitive, as well as a stash of food, clothes, and ammo—and even dirty diapers. (More Eric Frein stories.)
