Volunteer State gears up for 1-2 matchup

The No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the country will square off for 38th time in NCAA history when the top-ranked Memphis Tigers meet intrastate rival Tennessee on Saturday night. Undefeated Memphis is coming off its closest game of the season, a 79-78 win against UAB. Losses by Kansas and Duke allowed Tennessee to move from fourth to second, reports the Associated Press.

The No. 2 ranking is the highest in school history for the Volunteers; Memphis remained a unanimous No. 1 for the third straight week. The No. 2 team has won five of the last six 1-2 matchups, dating back to 1994. Both teams have to play once before their weekend showdown: Memphis visits Tulane and Tennessee hosts Auburn.
