2 Internet Cables Repaired

Repairs are complete on two undersea Internet cables in the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf that were cut last month, reports the AP. UK-based Fiber-optic Link Around the Glob (FLAG) said the Persian Gulf cable was cut by an abandoned anchor, but the other cable cut remained unexplained. The damage caused massive internet blackouts and delays throughout the Mideast and parts of Asia.

A third cable, in the Mediterranean, was also cut this month, and it is unclear whether it has been repaired yet, since it is not owned by FLAG and the AP could not reach its owners, a consortium of 16 companies. Commentators speculated that the cuts might have been sabotage, but neither FLAG nor government authorities responded. A 2006 cut was caused by an earthquake in Taiwan.
