In what police in Pakistan describe as an "honor-related incident," an 18-year-old woman was shot twice and thrown in a canal by family members after marrying the man she loved. Police say that a few days after Saba Maqsood married a neighbor against her family's wishes, her father, brother, uncle, and aunt tried to kill her and put her in a sack when they thought she was dead, the Nation reports. She regained consciousness and was saved from the canal by passers-by.

"She is a brave girl," a police spokesman tells Reuters. "She came out of the canal and approached a nearby fuel station from where a rescue team rushed her to hospital." She suffered gunshot wounds to her cheek and right hand but will survive, authorities say. Police say they have raided the family's home in Punjab province but all the suspects have disappeared. The incident comes the week after a mob that included relatives stoned a pregnant woman to death outside a court in Lahore. (More honor killings stories.)
