Minnesota might be improving under new coach Tubby Smith, but today proved it still has a ways to go as Wisconsin used the nation's second-best scoring defense to stifle the Gophers 63-47 in Minneapolis. Trevon Hughes scored 20 points to lead the Badgers, who remained tied for first place in the Big Ten conference with Purdue and are 18-3 overall.

Wisconsin was exceptional in taking advantage of the Gophers' mistakes, scoring 20 points off their 18 turnovers. "Good defense always leads to something good," Hughes said. The Badgers also quieted the sellout crowd early in the first half by making 11 of 14 shots out of the gate. Marcus Landry and Brian Butch added 11 apiece for the winners. (More basketball stories.)
