Sir, I'm going to need to give you a ticket … a lotto ticket, that is. In an attempt to add some cheer to the presumably fairly miserable job of pulling people over on Christmas, police in Melbourne, Fla., were handing out scratch-off tickets to the people they stopped yesterday, Florida Today reports—along, alas, with the less-welcome variety of tickets.

The officers bought the tickets with their own money to soften the regular patrols they say are necessary to keep the streets safe. "It's something good to do in light of the holidays. We're getting a lot of surprised looks…people don’t know what to say," one officer says. (Read more traffic stop stories.)
