It's been a tough year for plenty of Beltway insiders—even Sunny the dog. But in Chris Cillizza's estimation, one figure stands above—or perhaps below—the rest: the president himself, who had 2013's "Worst Year in Washington." "When historians write the story of Barack Obama’s presidency, 2013 will be his lost year," Cillizza writes in the Washington Post. "In a year that could have been about building his legacy, the president was instead reduced to salvaging the signature accomplishment of his first term."
At the beginning of the year, we might have fairly expected new gun control, immigration, and debt measures. None of these arrived, thanks in part to all the scandals. The IRS' Tea Party-targeting boosted Republicans; the Edward Snowden leaks left the president "on his heels"; questions over Benghazi prevented Susan Rice from taking over as secretary of state. The ObamaCare rollout, meanwhile, "was a complete failure." On top of all that, there was "not one Republican with whom (Obama) could negotiate." With both the economy and the health site improving, next year could be better. But "the damage done to Obama’s brand will linger well beyond this calendar year."
