Fast-thinking doctors in China are trying to save a man's severed hand by temporarily reattaching it to his foot, the Daily Mail reports. Xiao Wei cut off his hand in a work accident early last month, leaving him "shocked and frozen on the spot," he said, "until co-workers unplugged the machine and retrieved my hand and took me to the hospital." Local doctors couldn't help, so he went to a regional facility where experts gave him a second look. "I am still young, and I couldn't imagine life without a right hand," Wei said.

Doctors attached the hand to his ankle to keep it alive until they can perform a proper surgery. "His injury was severe," a doctor said. "Besides ripping injuries, his arm was also flattened. We had to clear and treat his injuries before taking on the hand reattachment surgery." A British doctor tells the BBC that such solutions are "well-recognized," although doctors usually reattach to the armpit "because the blood supply is better." Even if the severed part is properly attached in time, some patients sadly opt for an amputation because the limb can give them pain and stiffness. The Daily Mail's pictures are good, but be warned, they're pretty bizarre. (More severed hands stories.)
