While in Los Angeles shooting Glee, Cory Monteith seemed like he was working hard to remain sober, with help from the rest of the cast and especially his girlfriend, Lea Michele. But when he returned to Canada, his home, things changed, sources tell TMZ in a look at what the gossip site calls Monteith's "double life." The actor was often in Vancouver, hanging out with hard-partying friends and abusing drugs and alcohol, sources say. And lately Monteith's family was getting really worried—ultimately causing Monteith to pull away as they tried to help.

But things with Michele were reportedly going well: Monteith was talking about moving in with her mere hours before he was found dead, a friend who was with him tells Radar. A Daily Mirror source implies the two were engaged ("Lea was busy organizing what should have been the happiest day of their lives"), and an Us source says that while it wasn't official, the relationship was definitely heading toward marriage and they were planning to move in together after he returned from Vancouver. The source also denies rumors that the two had broken up before Monteith's death. As for the friend who was with Monteith the night before he died, he insists Monteith wasn't drinking at the time—but numerous tabloid reports indicate alcohol and other substances were found in his hotel room. It could be weeks before an autopsy report is out, Us reports. (More Cory Monteith stories.)
