Another big-budget disappointment this weekend, with Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim earning an underwhelming $38.3 million to take third place at the box office in its opening weekend. The flashy aliens vs. robots flick cost $190 million to make and received strong reviews, the Hollywood Reporter reports. Conversely, Adam Sandler's Grown Ups 2 had a far stronger debut, taking in second place with $42.5 million—more than the original, which opened to $40.5 million back in 2010—but was made for $80 million and has been panned by critics, the LA Times reports.

For the second week in a row, Despicable Me 2 took the No. 1 spot, bringing in $44.8 million for a domestic total of $229.2 million. Rounding out the Top 5: The Heat earned $14 million to take fourth place, and The Lone Ranger was No. 5 with $11.1 million, per the Times. (More Pacific Rim stories.)
