It was a box office battle of the sexes this weekend, with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy's buddy cop comedy The Heat beating out Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx's big-budget action flick White House Down in their opening weekends, the LA Times reports. The Heat did the best of any new film, and came out No. 2 overall, exceeding expectations by taking in $40 million. White House Down clocked in at No. 4 with a disappointing $25.7 million.

Pixar prequel Monsters University scared off the competition for a second week in a row, taking $46.2 million to retain its No. 1 position. Rounding out the top 5, World War Z came in at No. 3 with $29.8 million, and Man of Steel was No. 5 with $8.7 million. (Read more The Heat stories.)
