The majority of Americans believe homosexuals should be accepted by society, but the US still lags well behind many other countries in western Europe and Latin America when it comes to gay-friendly attitudes, according to a new survey. Pew Research polled 39 countries on the acceptance of homosexuality, finding 60% of Americans were accepting, compared with 88% in Spain, 87% in Germany, and 80% in both the Czech Republic and Canada. Other positive countries were Australia (79%), France (77%), Britain (76%), Argentina (74%), Italy (74%), and the Philippines (73%).
Conversely, countries rejecting homosexuality in the study tended to be Muslim nations, including many African and Asian countries, reports the Washington Post. In most Middle East and sub-Saharan African countries surveyed, more than nine in 10 people surveyed said homosexuals should not be accepted. Support was just 1% in Nigeria, 2% in Tunisia and Pakistan, and 3% in Egypt, Ghana, Jordan and Indonesia. Click to see the full results at Pew Research. (More homosexuality stories.)
