Mysterious artifacts, ancient temples, robots: This story has the makings of an amazing sci-fi film. Archaeologists have discovered hundreds of metallic orbs in a Teotihuacan pyramid in Mexico, reports Discovery News. Made of pyrite, they would have once been spectacular glowing spheres, say researchers. "They look like yellow spheres, but we do not know their meaning. It's an unprecedented discovery," says one of the archaeologists.

Teotihuacan, established around 100 AD near modern-day Mexico City and abandoned around 700 AD, was one of the great cities of the ancient world. The archaeologists used robots with infrared cameras and laser scanners to explore a tunnel believed to have been used for rituals by high-ranking priests or rulers in the "Temple of the Feathered Serpent." They will now excavate the final part of the tunnel and chambers, which are believed to hold something of great importance. "The tunnel is in pristine condition, untouched for almost two millennia," says a researcher. "Can you can imagine what can be found inside?" (More Teotihuacan stories.)
