Chain promises leaner combos by 2020

Like the rest of us, Taco Bell intends to diet tomorrow. Or, in the Bell's case, by 2020. By then, the fast-food chain is aiming to have 20% of its combo meal offerings clock in within one-third of the federal government's daily recommendations for calories, fat, and sodium, says CEO Greg Creed, according to NBC News. In a conference call, Creed said Taco bell had a "role to play in providing more balanced food choices."

The long lead time is intended to give the chain time to ease Taco Bell diners into the changes, much as it has quietly cut sodium in recent years. Creed says this health initiative will be "completely transparent" and "weasel proof," promising that the chain wouldn't, say, cut calories in a dish while increasing sodium. Still, don't expect health food. When asked if they'd be cutting some of the menu's biggest calorie bombs, Creed replied, "We're not going to walk away from what Taco Bell is."
