Peru Proves Missing Couple Are Safe, Gives Them Booze

Garrett Hand's mother can rest easy: After vanishing for more than a month while on a biking trip in Peru, her son has turned up alive. The simple explanation, which Hand and girlfriend Jamie Neal posted to Facebook on Wednesday: They were traveling through Amazon villages that had no electricity—which means no phone or Internet, too. Peru went the extra mile to prove they are OK, by posting a gallery of photos of the pair online yesterday, reports CNN.

Peru's tourism minister originally said the couple had been found safe on Tuesday, saying, "It seems like they're having a blast—so much so that they have forgotten to communicate with their families." The AP reports that he spoke with Hand the next day, and that Hand's reaction to learning about the commotion the two had caused was to laugh. And it seems like their blast-of-a-time is likely to continue. As Neal explained on Facebook, "The Peruvian military gave us our own house to stay in, and food and a bunch of booze to drink." But the attention over their non-vanishing is "insane," she wrote. "I may delete my Facebook when I get home." (More Garrett Hand stories.)
