A giant sinkhole opened up last night under a man's bedroom in Brandon, Florida, swallowing the 34-year-old, who is believed to be dead, reports CNN. The man's brother tried to rescue him from being swallowed by the hole, but was unable to and was pulled away by rescuers himself. Those crews have placed cameras and microphones in the hole, but have been unable to find any traces of the disappeared man, reports the AP.

Engineering officials will return later this morning with more sophisticated monitoring equipment to determine the depth of the sinkhole, which they believe could measure 50 feet. Though the man's bedroom is apparently at its center, CNN explains that much of the ground covering the sinkhole is still in place, but is in danger of collapse. As such, neighbors have been evacuated. (More Brandon Florida stories.)
