Adam Ward slapped a shot past scrambling goaltender Antero Niittymaki 43 seconds into overtime to lift the Boston Bruins to a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers Saturday, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Niittymaki was out of position for the last shot because he had been racing to get the puck from Boston's Marco Sturm. "I tried to get back to the net. I didn't see the shot," Niittymaki said.
"I heard he broke his stick on that. It's kind of a bad break," the goaltender added. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Bruins, the AP noted. The Flyers had won three in a row to close out a 5-1 road trip. Marc Savard and Sturm scored in the second period and Peter Schaefer in the third for the Bruins. (More hockey stories.)
