When Belizean police came to arrest John McAfee, he buried himself in sand, covering his head with a cardboard box so he could breathe, until they went away. "It was extraordinarily uncomfortable," McAfee tells Wired in his first interview as a fugitive murder suspect, "but they will kill me if they find me." McAfee swears he knows nothing about neighbor Gregory Faull's death—indeed, he suspects the killers were gunning for him. "I thought maybe … they got the wrong house," he says. "It spooked me out."
McAfee goes on to accuse authorities of sending "black-suited thugs" onto his property Friday night to poison his dogs—which neighbors, including Faull, had complained about. "Under no circumstances am I going to willingly talk to police in this country," he says. "They want to silence me. I am not well liked by the prime minister." Police say McAfee is a "prime suspect" in Faull's death and that his claims are ridiculous. "This guy amazes me every day," the head of gang suppression says. (More John McAfee stories.)
