John Edwards is turning up the heat in the countdown to Iowa, considered do-or-die for his campaign. He tells the New York Times that he would be the president quickest to bring American troops home from Iraq, pulling them all out—including those providing training and support for the Iraqi army and police—within 10 months. And in an op-ed piece in the Wall Street Journal, he blasts the excesses of corporate America and the plight of working families.

In Iraq, the bulk of US forces would be immediately withdrawn, he said. " We are there propping up their bad behavior." On leaving training and support troops, which other Dem candidates favor, Edwards says, "that is a continuation of the occupation." In the Journal piece, Edwards calls for health care reform, universal retirement accounts for all, and closing the gap between soaring CEO salaries and employee pay. (More John Edwards stories.)
