Dana Milbank: GOP cries foul as own tactics are used against it

Yes, this campaign has been an "ugly" one, as Republicans have carped about of late. But it's been this ugly before: Remember John Kerry's "Swift Boating" and Obama "palling around with terrorists?" The difference is that now "Democrats are employing the same harsh tactics that have been used against them for so long, with so much success," writes Dana Milbank in the Washington Post. Instead of "assuming the fetal position when attacked ... Obama’s campaign is giving as good as it gets—and then some."

And Mitt Romney's not exactly a saint when it comes to vicious attacks on opponents; that's how he won the primary. Romney complains that Obama is using "enmity and jealousy and anger" to win, but that's nothing new in a political campaign. Let's face it: "Umbrage doesn’t win elections. Ruthlessness does."
