The Mexican Navy has captured a man believed to be the son of Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman, the country's most-wanted drug lord. Jesus Guzman Salazar, 26, was paraded before the media in Mexico City after his arrest yesterday. His father runs the Sinaloa cartel, and officials say Guzman Salazar had a major role in the organization, running its real estate holdings and coordinating most of its shipments of cocaine and marijuana to the US, the New York Times reports.
A Navy spokesman says Guzman Salazar was captured thanks to intelligence work and information from US authorities. He was indicted on several drug trafficking charges by a court in Illinois in 2009, and could be extradited to the US. The cartel chief has two other sons on the wanted list; a fourth was killed in a gunfight in 2008. He also has twin baby daughters, who were born to his current wife in a California hospital last fall. She slipped back across the border with the babies soon afterward. (More Joaquin Guzman stories.)
