Authorities in Maryland say a mother accidentally backed her SUV into five children in the driveway of her home last night, killing one of them, an 8-year-old child. The injured children, ranging in age from 18 months to 11 years old, were taken to Children's National Medical Center in Washington. One child is in critical condition, and the three others have minor injuries. Authorities say the driver, Maria Anna Cruz-Lopez, mistakenly stepped on the accelerator instead of the brakes and accidentally drove her SUV into the children around 8:45pm.
She has not been charged, and alcohol and drugs aren't a factor. Police are trying to determine the relationship between the woman and the other children. (More SUV stories.)
