Sure, during the campaign he wasn't Mitt Romney's biggest fan—but it looks like Newt Gingrich is ready to let bygones be bygones. In an interview with Chris Matthews last night, Gingrich hailed the "organized" and "methodical" Romney for being "a lot like Eisenhower," the Huffington Post notes. "He is prepared to systematically do what he thinks is right for the country. And I think he might turn out to make a surprisingly good president." As for his previous complaints about the candidate: "Mitt Romney did what he had to do to become the nominee," Gingrich said, according to MSNBC.

The former speaker also reiterated something of a warning for Democrats: Attacking Romney on his Bain Capital days "doesn't work." "I wouldn't have won it on that issue," Gingrich noted. Eventually, the conversation turned from politics to animals—with Gingrich identifying the San Diego Zoo as his favorite zoo and the python as "probably" his favorite snake.
