This Is Spinal Tap actor Michael McKean was seriously injured yesterday when he was struck by a car on Manhattan's Upper West Side. The vehicle barreled into him as he was crossing the street, according to witnesses. “He’ll be OK, hopefully he’ll be fine,” said a spokeswoman. "It's pretty devastating." McKean, 62, broke his leg in the accident and suffered cuts and abrasions to his head. McKean's wife, actress Annette O’Toole, was flying from Los Angeles to be with her husband. McKean was to appear last night on Broadway in Gore Vidal's The Best Man.

McKean is best known for his role as lead singer and guitarist David St. Hubbins in the band Spinal Tap in the classic spoof documentary. He also starred as Lenny in Laverne and Shirley, and has worked for years in TV, film, and on Broadway. The accident marked the "first time he will have ever missed a curtain in his life," said his publicist. No one was arrested in the accident, notes the New York Daily News.
