Dick Cheney, pro-gay lobbyist? Turns out he did help support Maryland's gay marriage bill and may have influenced its passage in the state's House of Delegates yesterday, the Huffington Post reports via the Baltimore Sun. Republican Del. Wade Kach, who was expected to vote no, changed his mind after high-profile Republicans jammed his voice-mail with a pro-gay lobbying blitz. Included among the messages: an offer to chat with Cheney.

Kach insists his mind was changed by 11 hours of testimony from devoted same-sex couples, but he has called Cheney a "great man." Sources close to Cheney either shrugged off or doubted the story, but Log Cabin Republicans chief R. Clarke Cooper cleared things up: "I am proud and grateful that he has chosen to lend his voice to securing marriage in Maryland." Cheney's daughter is gay, and he has long supported same-sex marriage. (Read more Dick Cheney stories.)
