With little more than three days left before the polls close in South Carolina, Newt Gingrich is continuing a verbal onslaught that seems not to require oxygen: "If I carry this state on Saturday, I will be the Republican nominee," he vowed last night, telling his audience that the alternative was a "moderate" with "fairly high" odds that "he will lose to Obama." Though currently polling behind Mitt Romney, USA Today reports that the speaker is hoping to shore up conservative support, dismissing Rick Santorum as a diluter of the right-wing credo.

Over at the Washington Post, Amy Gardner notes that Gingrich dominated the airwaves yesterday, getting plentiful coverage by Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, among others—and that might mean the former speaker could be experiencing a post-debate surge. Gingrich is launching an ad blitz today, and pulling for a Palmetto State miracle. "Your support in the next few days can change history," Gingrich said. He certainly has the Wasilla vote sewn up.
