Biden Calls for CIA Video Probe

Sen. Joe Biden has called for Attorney General Michael Mukasey to appoint a special counsel to investigate the CIA's destruction of videos of interrogations of suspected terrorists. Biden, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, cited Mukasey's unwillingness, during confirmation hearings, to take a stand on whether waterboarding is torture.

The "easiest, straightest thing to do is to take it out of the political realm, appoint a special prosecutor, and let them decide," Biden said. The videotapes were originally considered protection for interrogators when harsh new methods of interrogation were introduced. CIA chief Michael Hayden will testify on the video scandal before the intelligence committees tomorrow. (More Michael Hayden stories.)
