Tom Hanks will soon release his long-in-the-works futuristic animated series—where else?—on the web. Twenty episodes of Electric City, just four minutes or so each, will premiere on Yahoo this spring. The series features an apparently peaceful city in a post-apocalyptic world, and deals with political and social issues relevant today. "On the surface, the Electric City is utopia and under the surface, Electric City is secrets and heavy-handed state control," says the head of original programming at Yahoo. "This is perfect for a lean-forward audience who likes to utilize the medium of the Internet."

It's Yahoo's first project with scripted original programming, as opposed to reality series and news summaries. Hanks has been working on the project for a number of years, and will provide the voice for one of the characters, reports AP. The series will be available online and via tablet devices.
