If you’ve got a giant trove of government secrets ready for release, you’ll just have to sit tight. Today was supposed to see the launch of WikiLeaks’ system overhaul, aimed at making it safer for sources to hand documents to the group. But Julian Assange tweeted over the weekend that the event would be delayed “in the interest of source protection,” the Financial Times reports.
Assange bemoaned “the deteriorating state of Internet security which directly impacts the ability of sources to communicate with journalists and human rights activists securely.” Instead, WikiLeaks will hold a news conference Thursday to begin its “new phase” as a “dramatic month” begins. The conference will reveal the “extraordinary privacy threats” its journalists face, according to WikiLeaks. Assange, meanwhile, is facing some challenges of his own: He’s attempting to appeal a ruling calling for his extradition to Sweden over sex assault accusations. (More Julian Assange stories.)
