As Libya’s revolutionary forces continue to fight Moammar Gadhafi for control, a spokesperson for Gadhafi said yesterday that 17 “mercenaries” have been captured in regime stronghold Bani Walid. That number includes what he called mostly French "technical experts" and "consultative officers." Two are English, one Qatari, and one Asian, Reuters reports. Pro-Gadhafi troops also fired on the ragtag crew of young volunteer fighters remaining near Bani Walid yesterday, forcing many to flee.
Fighting near Bani Walid continued today, the AP reports, noting that the former rebels are increasingly frustrated with their slow progress in Gadhafi’s last remaining strongholds. Revolutionary forces are also facing resistance in Gadhafi’s hometown, Sirte, and more remote bastions including Sabha, Houn, and Zallah. Meanwhile, Voice of America reports that the provisional authority also faces political challenges, as the National Transitional Council delayed announcing its new Cabinet positions “indefinitely,” the interim prime minister says.
