Sabotage Blamed for Hospital Deaths

Police fear that a killer member of staff could be on the loose in a British hospital. After a nurse noticed that several patients had unexpectedly low blood sugar levels, the hospital found that vials of intravenous saline solution appeared to have been injected with insulin. A dozen patients were affected, two of whom died. The 44-year-old man and 71-year-old woman were already terminally ill, and it's not clear whether the tampering was solely responsible for their deaths.

Insulin can cause death in very young, very old, or very sick patients, and there have been several "mercy killing" cases of medical professionals using it to kill patients. Investigators are trying to determine at what point the contamination took place. "At best, someone has tampered with them for whatever reason. At worst, this was a deliberate attempt to harm patients," a police source tells the Telegraph. (More insulin stories.)
