Apple’s proposed new headquarters would hold 12,000 employees, sit on 150 acres of land, and look "a little like a spaceship.” That’s how CEO Steve Jobs described it to the Cupertino City Council during a presentation of the tech giant’s plans, the Los Angeles Times reports, noting that many were surprised Jobs himself showed up at the meeting. The building would also be eco-friendly and generate its own power in “cleaner and cheaper” ways such as natural gas, Jobs said.
The new facility would be built just down the street from Apple’s existing headquarters, which only holds about 2,800 people. As the company has grown, “we're renting buildings—not very good buildings, either—at an ever-greater radius from our campus,” Jobs said. “It’s clear that we need to build a new campus.” Apple is expected to submit formal plans to the city for approval in the fall of 2012.
