Conservatives Put Up Fake Eviction Notices in Detroit

Americans for Prosperity hit a real sore spot with its latest flier—which was designed to look like an eviction notice and plastered to doors in the Delray neighborhood of Detroit—but the conservative group isn’t apologizing. “It was meant to startle people,” the group’s Michigan director tells the Detroit Free Press. “We really wanted people to take notice.”

The fliers asked residents to speak out against a proposed publicly-owned bridge to Canada, asserting that it would force some of the neighborhood’s residents to move. But many residents were outraged by the false alarm. Some speculated that the owners of a privately-owned bridge nearby, worried about competition, were behind the stunt. Americans for Prosperity won't reveal its membership, but the owners of that bridge released a statement saying they “had nothing to do with the bogus eviction notices." (More Detroit stories.)
