There are now five Western journalists missing amid fighting in Libya—though Western sources recently spotted three of them, including American freelancer Clare Morgana Gillis, in a Tripoli government detention camp, the Washington Post reports. “We’re hoping they’re released soon, but there hasn’t been an update for two days,” says an editor for the Atlantic, for which Gillis is a correspondent. She’s one of at least 18 journalists reportedly missing or being held in Libya.

Libya hasn’t acknowledged holding Gillis or the two journalists reportedly detained with her, American James Foley and Manu Brabo of Spain, nor have neutral officials been able to meet with them. Also missing are Matthew Van Dyke of Baltimore and Anton Hammerl of South Africa. “We’re greatly concerned that they’re there with no knowledge of the diplomatic efforts being made on their behalf,” says an editor of GlobalPost, which is working with the Washington Post and USA Today to respond to the situation.
